The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) serves as the central bank of Pakistan. Established through the State Bank of Pakistan Order of 1948, its fundamental constitution remained relatively unchanged until January 1, 1974, when the bank was nationalized and its scope of operations significantly expanded.
Today, the State Bank of Pakistan operates under the State Bank of Pakistan Act of 1956, with subsequent amendments. Its headquarters are located in Karachi, the financial hub of Pakistan. The SBP also oversees a wholly-owned subsidiary known as SBP Banking Services Corporation (SBP-BSC), which serves as the operational arm of the central bank, operating branches in 16 cities across Pakistan, including the national capital, Islamabad, and the provincial capitals.
